What Is a Locked PDF?

A locked PDF is a document that has been encrypted with a password using the PDF Standard Security system. The owner of the document sets a user (open) password that recipients must enter before the PDF viewer will display the contents. Some PDFs also carry owner restrictions — permissions that prevent printing, copying or editing — even without an open password.

How to Unlock a PDF File

Our Unlock PDF tool uses the open-source pdf-lib library running entirely in your browser. Upload your PDF, enter the password on the next page, and the decrypted document is generated locally on your device. The resulting file has the password removed — it will open freely in any PDF reader with no password required.

The process takes only seconds and your file is never uploaded anywhere. Everything happens in JavaScript on your machine.

Why Remove PDF Password Protection?

Password-protected PDFs can be inconvenient when you need to print, annotate or share a document you already own. Removing the password from your own document lets you print without re-entering a password, merge it with other PDFs, annotate it in tools that don't support encrypted files, and share it freely with colleagues or clients who need access.

Only unlock PDFs you own or have explicit permission to unlock.

Yes — our tool requires you to know the document's open password. This is a deliberate security measure: we only decrypt documents you already have the key for.
Yes. pdf-lib preserves all content — text, images, fonts, links, annotations and page layout — exactly as in the original encrypted document.
Completely. Your PDF is loaded into browser memory (IndexedDB) and your password is used locally by JavaScript. Neither the file nor the password are ever transmitted to any server.
The result page will display a clear error message. You can go back to the settings page, enter the correct password and try again without re-uploading your file.
Yes — select the "Remove restrictions only" option on the settings page. This strips owner-level restrictions (printing, copying, editing) without requiring any password.
