Frequently Asked Questions
You need multiple sizes. The minimum is 16×16 (browser tabs) and 32×32 (taskbar, shortcuts). For modern browsers add 48×48 and 96×96. For iOS and Android add 180×180 (Apple Touch Icon) and 192×192 (Android Chrome). This tool generates all the commonly required sizes in one download.
Use .ico for maximum browser compatibility (especially older IE) and PNG for modern browsers. SVG favicons are supported in modern browsers and scale perfectly at any size — use <link rel="icon" type="image/svg+xml" href="/favicon.svg"> alongside your ICO as a fallback.
Place favicon.ico in your web root (e.g. /public/). Browsers automatically look for /favicon.ico even without HTML tags. For PNG and Apple Touch Icon files, you can place them anywhere and point to them with <link> tags in your <head>. The README.html in the download pack shows you exactly what to add.
Browsers aggressively cache favicons. To force an update, hard-refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R), clear your browser cache, or add a version query string to the favicon link: href="/favicon.ico?v=2". It can take minutes to hours for the new favicon to appear in all tabs.
It depends on your design. Transparent PNGs adapt to both light and dark browser themes — great for logos on white or black backgrounds. A solid-coloured background gives more control over how your icon looks. Avoid transparency if your icon blends into the browser's default tab background.
An Apple Touch Icon is the image displayed when a user saves your website to the home screen on an iPhone or iPad. It should be 180×180 pixels with no transparency (iOS adds rounded corners automatically). Without one, iOS uses a screenshot of your page instead.
